Fujitsu is Australia’s first ICT company to have a fully NABERS rated data centre portfolio across its six locations, providing a way for data centre energy efficiency to be externally validated against a standard by an independent government assessor. NABERS have also assessed that Fujitsu’s data centres are achieving an efficiency of 33% higher than industry average. Every year over 34 Gigawatt hours of energy is saved and 30,611 tonnes of carbon, which is equivalent to 1,700 homes, compared to the market average data centre.

In 2008, long before most of its competitors, Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand set ambitious sustainability targets. Its contribution to the creation of a sustainable environment includes making environmental protection a top management priority.

Fujitsu’s environmental sustainability policy is based on the integration of risk-based management practices into company activities with the commitment to prevent pollution, protect the environment, continually improve our environmental performance and to encourage and support customers and society to do the same. The business assesses the environmental impacts of its activities and sets objectives and measurable targets. In considering the environmental impact of its operations, the ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System facilitates the reporting of risks, environmental and social issues, and covers all facility types within its portfolio. It is a requirement for all Fujitsu staff to adhere to this policy and is written into staff employment contracts and annual performance appraisals.

While taking internal sustainability commitments seriously, Fujitsu Australia has also developed a market leading sustainability consulting service that takes a customer-centric approach to sustainability. Fujitsu Australia has adopted the approach that sustainability should be about more than just compliance, but that it is actually about delivering leadership and better business outcomes for their customers and for society.

Fujitsu is also committed to implementing Green Procurement throughout their supply chain, which includes its business partners. In accordance with the Fujitsu Green Procurement Policy, their products incorporate energy conservation concepts in design and material selection right from the earliest stages of development. These initiatives ensure that they provide customers with eco-friendly products that reduce the burden on the environment.

Aside from implementing sustainable practices through its operations, Fujitsu has also been involved in several community initiatives surrounding plastic waste. For instance, Fujitsu hosts an annual internal Eco Tour, inviting employees from various regions to help reduce marine plastic pollution in one of the biggest marine plastic hot spots in the world, Tsushima, Japan. Similarly, they held an internal campaign where Fujitsu employees from various regions shared the different ways in which they avoid using plastic to help with the marine pollution situation.
